Counter Cultured Foods

Counter Cultured foods is a well-established business. Serving customers in Nelson and the surrounding area since 2018, this community institution is focused on one of life’s staples: delicious ferments. Made in small batches and using only organic ingredients which are mostly grown in the Kootenays, Counter Culture’s delicious organic ferments are a favourite in this small mountain town. Counter Cultured sauerkraut and kimchi is currently sold at five local stores, with plenty of room to expand into more retail grocery stores and restaurants. This is your opportunity to own a turn-key business in the West Kootenays!

The revenue stream is made up of retail sales at 5 outlets. Included in the sale is all equipment needed to produce the product, labels and more!

Facility: Current production is in Salmo, in our 1,000 square foot facility which has a large walk-in cooler and plenty of space for all stages of production and sale. This facility could be rented as part of the sale or production could be easily moved to a new location. The current facility is a dedicated commercial kitchen, only used for Counter Cultured Foods.

Operations/Business Products and Services: The main focus of Counter Cultured Foods is to have a sustainable business that supports local farmers and provides organically grown sauerkraut and kimchi to our community. Our footprint is small, using locally grown cabbage, carrots and onions. One farm that grows delicious cabbage for us is just over a kilometer from our production facility. Our signature three varieties of sauerkraut and kimchi make up the bulk of sales. However, we have explored how to expand into the frozen tempeh market and have plans and equipment for that.

Long-standing customers include:

• The Kootenay Coop – Nelson

• Salmo Foods – Salmo • Salmo Village Grocery – Salmo

• Charcuterie Totoche – Nelson

• Homegrown Market – Nakusp

Who is the Ideal Buyer?: Anyone who wants to grow the business! The only limits to this business growing have been a lack of time. One of the owners is a full-time nursing student and the other works for Whitewater. We started the business in 2018 and quickly got established through marketing, Kootenay Co-op food tasting booths, and two seasons at the Nelson Farmer’s Market. Then the pandemic hit. Despite no more food tastings and two seasons off from doing Farmer’s Markets, the demand for locally made sauerkraut stayed strong. Now it’s time to grow.

Do you have a farm? If so, buying Counter Cultured Foods is a perfect way to add value added products to your offerings.

Growth Opportunities: There are opportunities for growth!

These include:

• Selling bulk to restaurants and institutions such as Selkirk College

• Expansion into more stores: Save-On Foods, Evergreen Store, Ellison’s, etc..

• Resuming the Farmer’s Market (stopped for COVID) – Nelson’s Market, Salmo Market

• Expand the offerings of Counter Cultured Foods.

All equipment needed to make the product is included in the price of the sale

Inventory: Inventory – packaged sauerkraut ready for sale, spices, salt, etc are not included in the asking price but are for sale at cost to buyer. Personnel Counter Cultured Foods has been successfully run as a part time side business requiring only 1-2 people. Therefore, there is the potential to increase production by working more days and expanding into more markets.

The current owners will train and assist in all levels of production to ensure a seamless transition. Prior to starting the business we hired a food scientist to analyze the recipes and set up protocols and safety measures to ensure that we were selling a safe fermented food product.

Financials: Financials provided for serious inquiries only. Included in the sale is all the needed equipment to produce the product. Additional items for sale – walk-in cooler – price would need to be negotiated as the unit would have to be disassembled. The walk-in would be solely designated for the new owner if the current location were to be rented.

About the Area: Many people move to Nelson and Salmo for the lifestyle. With limited jobs in the region, one way to live here is to buy a small business. Counter Cultured Foods could provide that opportunity. Salmo is located roughly halfway between Calgary and Vancouver. It is approximately 100 miles north of Spokane, WA. Salmo is a quiet farm town that is quickly becoming a popular location with new restaurants and brewpubs, lots of new construction and many young families moving in. From the Village of Salmo you can drive five minutes to the local ski hill or walk out your back door to go hiking, swimming or cross country skiing. Nelson is the largest town near Salmo. With snow-capped alpine peaks visible from the sandy beaches along Kootenay Lake, Nelson offers more outdoor recreation opportunities than most inhabitants have time to pursue! Hiking and mountain biking, road-riding, rowing, sailing and golf are just some of the summer sports on offer. Skiing and snow recreation keep us active throughout the winter. Nelson’s Arts and Cultural sector is well-established and well-renowned throughout BC and beyond and is constantly evolving and adapting to new opportunities. Nelson has a fully equipped hospital and numerous schools and government services. The closest commercial airport is West Kootenay Regional Airport, located 30 km west of the city, in Castlegar. “Slightly off the beaten track” is not at all a bad place to be as the world struggles with the Covid-19 pandemic. Nelson’s proximity to trails and other outdoor spaces allowed residents to continue to exercise and maintain an enviable lifestyle during the initial public health response to the pandemic. When the store shelves were temporarily bare as the regions struggled with supply chain issues, Counter Cultured Foods, with its local ingredients was able to supply all the local stored with delicious and healthy fermented foods!
