The Hostel at Shon’s opening soon in Nakusp

There’s a new deluxe place to spend the night in Nakusp, but with budget prices, and bringing your bicycle is encouraged.

Shon’s Bike and Ski will soon have their hostel above the shop open for visitors to come stay. The eponymous Shon, his wife Janis, and Brent Wanstall, all-around bike mechanic and right-hand man, gave Imagine Kootenay a sneak peek of the new hostel, which is scheduled to open in June 2018.

A lot of time and care has gone into restoring the building’s structure and re-purposing the space which has served as an opera house, office buildings and apartments during its history. Brent said the entryway stairs were an interesting project, and they turned out beautifully.

Shon and Janis and their family also live upstairs next to the hostel and love living on Nakusp’s main street.

Although the prices are low, the look and feel of the renovated space is comfortable and stylish. It’s been important to Shon and Janis throughout the extensive renovations to the building that a sense of history be preserved, and there are pieces of furniture that have local stories. For example, the “throne” (pictured below) was made in the Shushwap area in the 1900’s for a church in the Edgewood area.

Like other hostels, most beds will be inexpensive and have shared access to a kitchen and bathrooms.

There are private rooms, and one family suite with its own bathroom as well. For details, visit the Hostel @ Shon’s website or call 250-265-3332.
