Before You Head Into the Backcountry: New Avalanche Canada Forecast Phone App!

Heading out into the backcountry this winter? Stay informed and know the conditions before you go.

The Powder Highway is living up to its name this season, and for die-hard powder hounds wanting not only first, but only, tracks that will mean heading off the beaten path and into the backcountry.

To help you plan your trip, Avalanche Canada and their Mountain Information Network can provide you with up-to-date, real time avalanche forecasts to help you stay safe enjoying the Kootenay backcountry!

Available online and in mobile versions, it’s a free service for sharing information about riding, avalanche, snowpack, and weather conditions as well as incidents in real time. Posts are not moderated and go live as soon as they are submitted or, if you’re offline, as soon as a connection is obtained.

Sharing information helps other users make better decisions about where and when to ride safely. It also helps Avalanche Canada forecasters provide better public avalanche safety information, especially in areas where other sources of data might be scarce.

You can also share your MIN reports on other social media platforms, so submitting to the MIN helps you keep your friends up to date on where you’ve been and what you’ve been doing in the mountains.

You can post and view information online at www.avalanche.ca or with the Avalanche Canada app on your iOS or Android device.
