In 1970 long time residents Dale and Judy Garrett moved to Hosmer after Dale was hired to work for McGauley Ready Mix in Sparwood.

Over the years Dale moved up through the ranks to become the manager of both the Sparwood and Elkford batch plants. In the early 1980’s the economy fell and the Elkford plant was taken apart and shipped to the states. The Sparwood plant was about to close so Dale and Judy secured financing to purchase the plant and a few older trucks to continue the operation under Garrett Ready Mix Ltd. Before they actually opened and were still trying to get their equipment in shape, they were given their first project by Heiko Socher to provide concrete for a new lift. They opened their doors in August 1985 and 26 years later they are now providing concrete for the newest lift at the Fernie Alpine Resort.

Over the years Garrett Ready Mix Ltd. experienced some very slow times but somehow managed to survive. In 2011 they celebrated 26 years in business and they owe their success to the people, contractors, and the commercial and residential support they have received. This locally owned and operated business is also considered a “family business”. There have been four generations of the Garrett family working in the concrete industry including a grandfather, father, uncles, and brothers. As well Dale and Judy’s two children are fully involved in the day to day operations.
